Phil's Corner
There are many reasons to celebrate.  Another day of life on earth.  Another day to breathe and another day to worship.

Christ is Risen!  It is time to celebrate!  What an AWESOME time of year!  I hope you took time this past weekend to worship and celebrate what Jesus has done for you.

Now that you are fired up because you have been reborn and forgiven, what are you going to do with what you know? You have a choice to make.  Will you listen to the Spirit and share the Gospel with those around you or will you keep this eternal life or death information inside?

Where does God want you to go and who does he want you to share the Gospel with?  I strongly encourage you to follow through and  get involved!

Happy Easter!
Phil

Phil on the Radio
Tune in to WMBI Moody Radio this Thursday (4/16/09) from 3 to 4 PM (Central time) to hear Phil live on the radio talking about his cancer journey and Phil’s Friends.  You can find WMBI at 90.1 FM, 1110 AM and here to listen live on the internet.

Phil’s Friends’ Testimony

A year has passed since I received word that my body was battling cancer.  Thinking back on this past year makes me realize how much cancer has impacted my life.  One of the most significant ways it has changed me is by causing me to enjoy the little things in life and to always be thankful.  Going through a life changing experience such as cancer, has helped me see a more positive outlook on life.  Rather than going through each day complaining about everything that could go wrong, I now am more apt to smile about what is going good.  Another way cancer has affected my life is how I spend my time.  I have become more involved with organizations that reach out to others especially through Phil's Friends, that reaches out to cancer patients.  When I was undergoing treatment for Hodgkin’s Lymphoma last year, Phil’s Friends supported me.  After receiving their support along with the support from many other friends and family, I knew I wanted to re-gift that support to others by becoming involved with Phil’s Friends.  I was given this opportunity while attending Concordia University Chicago this year.  One of the Phil’s Friends’ chapters is located on Concordia’s campus.  I was a member in the fall and was handed over the leadership role in January.  I now am in charge of running meetings, sending out cards and packages, as well as supporting the patients we serve.  I have also been able to attend and serve at fundraising dinners for Phil’s Friends.  Through Phil’s Friends I have made connections with many other people who have gone through a similar cancer experience.  At one point I was emailing at least six different people to let them know I was praying for them and I cared.  Some of the people were familiar to me, others were not but to me it did not matter.  I wanted to be a positive and encouraging aspect in their lives when they felt like no one else was there.  I know that in the remaining years of college, I will continue to play an integral role with Phil’s Friends as we continue to spread support to those affected by cancer.

Phil’s Corner

"In my Father's house are many rooms; if it were not so, I would have told you. I am going there to prepare a place for you.”  John 14:2

Life is full of preparations.  We prepare for visitors at our house, family gatherings, work and an evening meal.   Sometimes we prepare for others and sometimes others make preparations for us.

At Phil’s Friends we are currently preparing for a youth event where we will distribute around 250 care packages in one day, Walkfest 09 with Big Daddy Weave, our WMBI weekly radio clip debut and much more.

Lately, volunteers of our ministry have helped prepare meals for patients and their families, prepare tax returns, write out cards, fill care packages, and connect new patients with survivors to help prepare them for their cancer journey.

God’s word prepares us with the knowledge we need for living.  Jesus prepared us with a perfect life example. The Holy Spirit prepares and equips us with everything we need for a life of service to Jesus.  I don’t know about you, but I am ecstatic that Jesus has a place in heaven prepared for each of us who believe in Him.

What are you preparing for today?  Who can you help today prepare for what matters tomorrow?

Serving Him,

Phil Zielke

Phil’s Friends Volunteer Testimony
Cancer touched my family when I was 15 years old. My grandmother that I was very close to was diagnosed with Melanoma and she passed away  a year after her diagnosis. At the time and for a long time I was very angry with God. After so many years I have understood that she was better off going to be with the Father. I have always had a heart to help others, being a Christian for so many years, and it never occurred to me that I could help and make a difference giving support to so many that are grieving and also the families that are left behind dealing with the pain. When I first heard of Phi’ls Friends on the radio about the walkathon that was going to take place in Melrose Park, it really spoke to me. It woke up inside of me a lot of emotions that I remember having when my grandma passed away. I knew it was time for me to step up and do something to share with others the love, courage & strength that God has given me through the rough times. I feel very blessed that you have given me the opportunity to join this ministry.

Thanks,

Shakyra

Phil’s Friends Patient Testimonial

Phil’s Friends are a truly amazing group of caring people who are reaching out to people with cancer, their family & friends.  I stumbled on their website in 2007 after recovering from surgery.  I was not searching for anything in specific and somehow ended up here.  I look back now and know that God led me to Phil’s Friends and they were even located within miles of where I live!  Since the end of 2007, through the whole year of 2008, and into this year, they have been there for me.  They never forgot about me.  The care package I received was filled with meaningful things that helped ease the pain that I was feeling.  The neatest thing of all is, it seems that every time I am going through more tests and frightened about the results, I either get an email or card in the mail saying they are praying for me or how in specific can they pray for me.  To know that people I never have met are praying for me is the most wonderful feeling imaginable.

A little background on me…

I was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1998, Stage 1, and in 2006 I was diagnosed with Stage IV metastasis breast cancer.  I was totally taken off guard.  From 2006 until September of 2007 I was doing alternative things.  In the fall of 2007 I ended up in the hospital with a brain tumor.  While undergoing many different types of tests they found cancer in other areas also.  I continue to go for chemo weekly and am still fighting the fight.  By the grace of God I am still able to work part-time and for the most part feel pretty good.

My favorite scripture verse is:  “So be truly glad.  There is wonderful joy ahead, even though you have to endure many trials for a little while.  These trials will show that your faith is genuine.  It is being tested as fire tests and purifies gold.  (I Peter 1:6-7).

In closing, if anyone reading this newsletter is dealing with cancer or has a family member or even a friend with cancer, please sign them up to receive a “Care Package”.  It will make their day!

Thank you Phil & Friends for sharing the word of God and being there for people in need.

Bev

Phil’s Corner

It wasn’t too long ago that we celebrated our “new start” in 2009. By now, if you set new year’s resolutions, chances are likely that you have failed a few times along the way.  No matter how many times we fail it is great to know that we have a God who lovingly waits for us with open arms. He accepts us no matter what we have done and He welcomes the opportunity to help with our every need.  Christ’s blood shed for us on the cross is the “free gift” that will never fail. Remember to thank God for His “new start” with you each day.

God’s blessings as you walk with him,

Phil’s Friends Volunteer

Dear Phil’s Friends,

I want to thank you for the opportunity to be a part of your ministry family. Cancer is no stranger to our family. My grandmother, my aunt, and my sister- in- law all were diagnosed with breast cancer. Thank God; all 3 of them are survivors!

We lost someone very dear to us this past March, my daughter Tanya. Although it was not cancer that took her, it was a lifelong illness that weakened her defenses, and finally it was pneumonia that took her home to our Lord.

She was 24 yrs young, and had struggled her whole life with surgeries, transplants, and countless visits to the hospital. Through it all, she kept her head high, and remained strong in her faith. She showed us that no matter what God has in store for us, we couldn’t let it get us down. Her motto was, “If it doesn’t kill me, it can’t hurt me”!

Tanya blessed the lives of many people, more than we even knew. At her wake, I had so many people come up to me and tell me stories of how Tanya gave them hope, and strength to beat whatever they were going through. It was then that it really hit me. When we are down, and struggling, what a better way to keep our heads high, but to help others around us.

“There is always someone out there who has it worse than me”, was something that Tanya would tell me over and over again, as she lay in her hospital bed hooked up to endless machines, facing yet another surgery.  It amazed me how she could keep such a positive attitude through it all.  Had it not been for our faith, family, and the support of our friends and church family, we would have been lost!

I have always been very passionate about working with, and helping people. Everything that life has dealt us has made me even more passionate about it. Had it not been for the love, support, and the word of God that we received in our darkest times, I don’t know how we would have made it through it.

I am blessed to have the opportunity to work with an organization that does just that! Phil’s Friends is all about compassion, support, and sharing God’s love with people as they face what could possibly be the toughest journey they will ever travel. Visiting with them, helping them with things that we all take for granted, praying with them and their families…. it is truly an amazing experience!!

God’s Blessings,

Jill Sandoval

Phil’s Friends Newsletter – December 2008

Merry Christmas to each of you! We pray you will have a blessed holiday season! As we reflect upon our year and our blessings, we are thankful to each of you who have partnered with Phil’s Friends. Thank you!

Phil’s Corner

Have you noticed the doors you have walked through lately? It is likely that you have walked through doors to stores this Christmas season. We walk through doors all the time; doors that vary in shape and size.  Doors provide an entrance to a warm place in the midst of a cold and snowy December. Doors also provide an exit from unwanted circumstances. As the days get closer to Christmas, let's remember the true meaning and the best door that was ever opened for us; the entrance to salvation through Jesus Christ.  At the same time let's remember the door that was closed for us because of Christ, the door of sin and eternal punishment.

How awesome it is to see how frequently God opens and closes doors in our daily lives.

As a part of Phil's Friends it is great to see how many doors God continues to open to reach cancer patients and their families with the message of hope only found in the Gospel.

Are there any doors God has opened in your life recently that you need to walk through?  I pray that His Spirit will provide all the courage you need to enter and exit at the appropriate time.

Merry Christmas,

Phil

Testimony

I was having headaches for a week and went in for an MRI.I was told a had spots on the brain. I checked into Alexian Bros and was checked out and was told I had renal kidney cancer that had metastisized to the brain. We decided to get a second opinion, so we came home after one week at Alexian Bros. As soon as we got home Phil's Friends delivered a care package to my home. I had been to two of Phil's walk-a-thons, but I never thought about receiving a care package. I had mixed emotions at first because we were still kind of in shock about the whole thing. But then as I worked through all the emotions that many of the books said I would, I thought what a wonderful thing. It was a spiritual duffle bag. It helped with my feelings of loneliness. Then I talked with Phil on the phone, and Phil and his wife came to my house and it was very encouraging. I feel much better now but at that time it was new and Phil really helped. The banquet was very emotional but in a good way. Phil' Friends has been a blessing and I plan on getting involved after my surgery and chemo. Dave.

Recent Newspaper Article about Phil’s Friends

Our attitude is the only thing we can control

November 13, 2008

I recently read a quote that I would like to share -- one that I will not soon forget. "Here I stand at the edge of a large cliff, not able to see what my next step will bring. I take the next step knowing that God will either guide my feet as they step, or He will teach me how to fly..."

These words are from the blog entry on the Web site of philsfriends.org. Phil's Friends Christian Cancer Foundation provides sincere hope and encouragement to patients in the midst of their struggle with cancer.

"It seems we know an increasing number of people affected by cancer, and Phil's Friends provides support and hope for them when they need it most," said Sara Dahms of Darien.

With our infinitely busy lives, there are many concerns that compete for our attention. But priorities are completely realigned when a diagnosis of cancer has been given. The words, "stage 4B hodgkin's lymphoma" were spoken by a doctor back in 2004 to a young man who has taken this devastating news and turned it into a powerful ministry that touches the lives of countless individuals.

"To this day I will say that cancer was the best thing that has ever happened to me," said Phil Zielke, founder of Phil's Friends.

After four months of aggressive chemotherapy at University of Chicago Hospital, tests showed no cancer. But only months later, the cancer reappeared and more aggressive treatments were administered. At the height of these treatments, Phil endured chemotherapy followed by a stem-cell transplant and radiation.

There were countless doctor visits, countless tests and countless trips into Chicago. Phil and his family and friends are determined to accept what God has in store.

Phil has said, "Lord, if this is my time to go to Heaven, I am ready. But, if this is not my time I will keep on fighting and devote my life to you and whatever you have planned for me."

In some of his weakest times he cried out and his prayers were answered. He believes that God wants him to use this sickness and what he has learned from it to help others in similar situations.

Phil's Friends distributes care packages to cancer patients and their families and then offers support by journeying with them per their request. These care packages are tailor-made for the recipient. A child's is delivered in a backpack, while another comes in a gym bag or a tote. Home and hospital visits are made and letters and cards are sent on a regular basis.

Annual fund-raising events are held -- a Walk-A-Thon, and concerts with the likes of Avalon, 33 Miles, and Mark Schultz.

This year, from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 21, the inaugural Celebration of Hope dinner will take place at Drury Lane in Oakbrook Terrace. It is sure to be a moving and inspiring event.

The evening will include keynote speaker and former NFL player Ray McElroy, who has dedicated his post-career time and efforts toward the enrichment and development of youth. He brings his empowering message to elementary, middle and high schools across the country. He challenges kids about the consequences of their choices while sharing the hope he personally found in Jesus Christ.

Last March, McElroy accepted the opportunity to be team chaplain for the Chicago Bears where he conducts weekly chapel and Bible studies for Bears players, coaches and their spouses.

The community is invited to attend the Celebration of Hope dinner. Register by Monday, Nov. 17, at philsfriends.org.

"God transformed my attitudes, priorities, and my outlook on life through cancer," said Phil.

He wants all cancer patients and their families to have the peace of Jesus Christ as their Savior to comfort them the way he did. He views this as his purpose in life.

What is your purpose? Each of us needs to reflect and determine this for ourselves, certainly. But, do give this careful thought and consideration. If you were to leave this world tomorrow, for what will you be remembered? Perhaps, it is the impact that you make on others.

Now, that is powerful stuff.

I can do all things through Christ who gives me strength.

Phil’s Friends Newsletter – November 2008

Phil’s Corner

As I was preparing to write "Phil's Corner" for the November newsletter, I was thinking about what point God wanted me to get across.  I was trying to decide what makes Phil's Friends different than most other cancer organizations.  What came to mind, after prayer, is that it’s not what makes Phil's Friends different; it is what makes us different.  What makes us different is Christ.  He has changed us from the inside out.  The point IS the CROSS!  Our ministry is important and our lives are important because we have the Holy Spirit living inside of us.  God has given us His power to provide hope and support to those in need who struggle with cancer.  The words are in us and all we have to do is be the hands and feet of Christ.  Through His Spirit, He will work saving grace among those we support, according to His will.  We have witnessed people come to Christ, and we have seen those who have rejected the message.  The point is that everything will happen in God's time.  Some people receive a care package, and it is their turning point.  Others are also supported through personal visits, phone calls, cards, emails, prayer, etc.  These people come to Christ in God's timing.  We are all part of the big puzzle.  Phil's Friends may be the last piece for someone in their walk with Christ, or it may be the beginning.  How will you be a piece of that puzzle today?

~Phil Zielke

Bank of America Chicago Marathon Update

Thank you to our faithful runners who participated in the Bank of America Chicago Marathon! We thank you for supporting Phil’s Friends with your fundraising efforts as well as your major physical efforts in running this race! Many cancer patients will be reached and blessed because of you. Our deepest thanks to each of you!

One of our runners, Mari Jo Hecker, said the following about running for Phil’s Friends:

I have known the Zielke family for several years. I met them at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Elmhurst, where both of our families are members. I remember praying for Phil and his family when he was diagnosed and when he was receiving treatment for his cancer. Phil and his family had overwhelming strength, courage, and most importantly faith during this time.

Phil has started this great foundation, helping others during their times of need. I was honored to be asked to run for Phil’s Friends. I have been a runner for 28 years, and this Chicago Marathon was my 40th marathon. I was happy to help raise funds for Phil’s fantastic organization.

Volunteering for Phil’s Friends

THANK YOU to our many, faithful volunteers who pray for our cancer patients and who support them in a variety of ways. We appreciate all you do!

One of our faithful volunteers, Doria, wrote the following about her involvement:

Why I Volunteer for Phil’s Friends

My name is Doria Martuzzo, and I’m a volunteer for Phil’s Friends.  In 2001, at the age of 44, I was diagnosed with ovarian cancer and underwent two surgeries and six rounds of chemotherapy.  Then in September 2007, I was diagnosed with cancer again -- this time it was melanoma, a potentially deadly skin cancer, and I had two more surgeries.  Currently cancer-free, I am happy to volunteer for “a ministry that provides Christ-centered support and hope to those affected by cancer.”   I know first-hand how important it was to me when people reached out and supported me when I needed it most.

Phil’s Friends offers a variety of opportunities to plug in and make a difference.  I have “adopted” a cancer patient and her family (beautiful 16-year-old Taylor who is battling brain cancer.)  I met Taylor’s mom Kathleen (by God-coincidence) at a Christian concert.   I noticed Kathleen was holding a Phil’s Friends Care Package that she had just received at the booth.  We started talking and things just clicked.  Though Taylor’s mom and I live miles apart, she says is thankful to have me as her “cyber-friend.”  Taylor’s picture is on my refrigerator as a reminder for me to pray every day and to stay in touch.  I’ve also had the honor of sharing my testimony at the Walk-A-Thon, enjoyed making homemade cards for care packages, and will be spreading the message of the ministry of Phil’s Friends this fall by doing chapel services in schools. Why do I volunteer?  Truthfully, I get more than I give.

We would love to have you join our Chicago-land Chapter and Support Group!

Phil Receives Volunteer Award!

Recently Phil was the recipient of the 2007 Volunteer Excellence Award from Thrivent Financial, a Fortune 500 company. He was chosen as one of a few recipients from the country. Phil accepted the award on behalf of the ministry, highlighting the amazing volunteers who make the ministry run day to day. He explained that the role of each of the volunteers is very important in fulfilling the mission of providing Christ-centered support and hope to those affected by cancer. He explained that it is actually difficult to think of himself as a volunteer because bringing the Gospel message to cancer patients and their families is really a life calling. He emphasized that he is grateful for the many things that God has done through Phil’s Friends, for the growth that has taken place thus far, and for all that God will continue to do.

Thrivent awarded Phil with a plaque as well as a gift of $500 to the ministry. Phil expressed his thanks not only for the award, but moreover for the continuing partnership with Thrivent through their generous volunteers, assistance, and matching funds that they provide.

ThuThursdaySepSeptember18th2008 Phil's Friends Newsletter - September 2008

Welcome to the first Phil's Friends Newsletter!

Phil's Corner
Hello! My name is Phil Zielke, and I'm the Founder of Phil's Friends. I was diagonosed with Stage 4B Hodgkin's Lymphoma in April of 2004. After aggresive chemotherapy, tests showed no signs of cancer by September of that year. In April of 2005, the cancer returned. I endured more aggresive treatment including 6 days of lethal chemotherapy, radiation and a succssful stem cell transplant. By November of that same year, the tests showed that I was cancer free. It was on my hospital bed during my sickest moments where the ideas for Phil's Friends were born. I wanted to use this sickness and what I had learned from it to help others in similar situations. God transformed my life during my fight with cancer, including my priorities, attitudes, and my outlook on life. To this day I will say that cancer was the best thing that has ever happened to me. God was my source of strength, and I want other cancer patients to know the strength and peace that can only come through faith in Christ.

Phil's Friends reaches out to cancer patients with the compassion of Christ and shares the gospel message of salvation through Christ alone. If God puts it on your heart to help out with this great cause, please contact us today.

Walk-a-Thon Update

Phil’s Friends would like to sincerely thank all who attended our 3 Annual Walk-A-Thon on May 4. Additionally, we would like to thank all of our volunteers! We appreciate EACH of you whose support and efforts made the day very successful! Thank you!

God blessed the day in innumerable ways, and we give Him all the glory for His provision and sovereignty! He provided beautiful weather which allowed people to enjoy the many activities – listening to 11 bands, playing games, enjoying a moon jump and dunk tank (featuring Phil in the hot seat), a hot rod show, a silent auction, visiting various booths, making cards for cancer patients, writing prayer requests on the prayer wall, enjoying concessions, listening to testimonials from cancer patients, enjoying the Moody radio emcees, and walking many laps to raise money! Some special laps included a prayer lap, a cancer survivor lap, and a family lap. After hearing nine very talented local bands throughout the afternoon, the evening concluded with concerts by popular bands 33 Miles and Mark Schultz. The Mark Schultz concert was a highlight of the day, with people gathered on the football field to hear this band praise God, enjoying the ideal weather and the sunset. It was a great ending to an inspiring day.

We were able to raise to raise over $48,000 this year. This money is being used to continue our mission, which is to initially reach out to cancer patients with the gospel message and then offer continuing support.

Again, we would like to thank the 1,000 people who participated in our fundraiser this year. We are extremely appreciative of your support which allows us to continue our mission! God bless you!

"Thank you so very much for thinking of me with the blue bag full of comforting goodies and books. I cried when I received them. I was surprised there was anyone out there who would do such a good deed for a total stranger. I went throught breast cancer 13 years ago. I fought against it then and now I'm going to do it again, with God's help."

Letter From Bruce (after receiving a care package for his father)
My father had not been feeling well for some time. After seeing doctors in Brazil and Florida, it was determined that he had cancer, and that there wasn’t much time left for him on earth. My sister-in-law and I went to Florida to see my father for the last time. I brought a Phil’s Friends package with to give to my dad. I went through the items with my father and he had a lot of questions. We explained what each item was and what it meant. That Saturday my dad decided to go to church on Sunday morning. Near the end of the church service, the pastor asked people to come forward if they wanted to make a public profession of accepting Christ. My father raised his hand and went forward. In the church there was a big baptismal pool where people were being baptized, but instead, my father decided that he wanted to be baptized in the Gulf of Mexico. So, he went out into the Gulf of Mexico and was baptized.

The care package was the final piece for my dad. Sometimes it takes that one more piece to put the final brick in the wall to become a Christian. The Holy Spirit is constantly tugging at us, and the devil is constantly trying to make sure that the final brick doesn’t get into place. Phil’s Friends was the last piece that helped my father realize that he needed to be saved. The fact that someone (Phil’s Friends) would reach out who doesn’t even actually know you means a lot.

FriFridaySepSeptember12th2008 Phil's Friends Newsletter - September 08

One care package recipient said:

"Thank you so very much for thinking of me with the blue bag full of comforting goodies and books. I cried when I received them. I was surprised there was anyone out there who would do such a good deed for a total stranger. I went throught breast cancer 13 years ago. I fought against it then and now I'm going to do it again, with God's help."
